SE Portland Neighborhood Assembly Wants Your Event Info

Are you involved in planning an action or event? If so, we want you to participate in the next SE Portland Neighborhood Assembly coming up this Saturday Feb. 11 at SEIU Local 503 (4-6 pm).

A rough draft of the assembly agenda is available on the Portland General Assembly website:
http://www.portlandgeneralassembly.org/groups/se-neighborhood-assembly/docs/feb-11th-se-neighborhood-assembly-agenda-draft

We are still in the process of putting together a structure for the SE Assembly, but in the meantime, many are ready for action now. As you'll see, one of the items on the agenda is announcements of actions and projects that are currently being planned, followed by small group discussion of those actions and projects, with the opportunity to get involved in them. We are hoping individuals can come to publicize specific events they are currently involved in planning. If you would like to do this, please put a comment on the agenda post, so that you and your action can get listed on Saturday's agenda.

Free Movie Night at SEIU Feb. 16

SEIU Local 503 invites the neighborhood to participate in their monthly Tom Dwyer Movie Night on Thursday Feb. 16 for the screening of Remember the Titans.

Following the movie, viewers will have the opportunity to offer their reflections and reactions to the movie as well as learn about ways they can engage with our community. The monthly free movie is sponsored by SEIU Local 503, Jobs With Justice, We Are Oregon, and Economic Fairness Oregon.
Next Month: One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest

Remember the Titans, Synopsis:

In 1971 in Alexandria, Virginia, at the desegregated T. C. Williams High School, African American head coach Herman Boone (Denzel Washington) is hired to lead the school's football team. Coach Boone takes the coaching position from current head coach Bill Yoast (Will Patton), who has been nominated for the Virginia High School Hall of Fame, and who also later decides to move on to other coaching opportunities. In a show of respect and in an attempt to ease racial tension, Boone offers an assistant coaching position to Yoast. Yoast at first refuses Boone's offer, but is then tempted to join after the white players pledge to boycott the team if he doesn't participate. Dismayed at the prospect of the students losing their chances at scholarships, Yoast changes his mind and takes up the position of defensive coordinator. The black and white athletes of the football team frequently clash in racially motivated conflicts at their football camp, including those between captain Gerry Bertier (Ryan Hurst) and Julius Campbell (Wood Harris). However, after forceful coaxing and rigorous athletic training by Boone, the team achieves both racial harmony and triumph. After returning from football camp, Boone is told by a member of the school board that if he loses even a single game, he will be fired. Subsequently, the Titans go through the season undefeated while battling racial prejudice, before slowly gaining support from the community.

Just before the state semi-finals, Yoast is told by a member of the school board that he will be inducted into the Hall of Fame after the Titans lose their game, implying that the game has been fixed to ensure Boone gets fired over his race. During the game, when it becomes apparent that the referees are engaging in biased officiating against the Titans, Yoast warns the head official that he will go to the press and expose the scandal unless the game is called fairly. The referees yield and the Titans ultimately win the game, but Yoast is told afterward that his actions have resulted in his loss of candidacy for the Hall of Fame.

Later, while celebrating after the victorious game, Bertier is paralyzed in a car accident, when he is hit by a truck while accelerating into an intersection. Despite the fact that Bertier is no longer able to play, the team goes on to win the championship. Ten years later, the coaches and athletes from the team reunite to attend Bertier's funeral, as Sheryl reiterates the message of racial equality taught by the Titans.

In the epilogue, the film reveals what many of the Titans are doing.

Mt. Scott-Arleta Survey Launch TOMORROW (Tuesday, Feb 7th)

tomorrow afternoon will be the inaugural meeting for the Mt. Scott Arleta Survey Project, funded by a grant from Southeast Uplift and in partnership with ROSE Community Development Corporation and the Mt. Scott Community Center.

time: 4pm
location: 4629 se 64th ave

we will spend our first few meetings getting clear on our vision and purpose statement for the project, setting the goals of the project and establishing how to measure our success in these goals, and doing an asset map of the project team.

if you are interested in being a core participant in making this project a reality over the next year and wish to have a roll in crafting its direction, these first few mtgs will be important for you to plug into.  if you are interested in supporting the project by plugging into it in other ways (ie being given a particular task to do such as neighborhood canvassing or data entry) it is not required that you come to these first slue of mtgs, i will be sending out updates with ways to plug in as they emerge.

just wanted to put this out there and re-frame this first meeting a bit since i first presented this meeting as being about 'survey development' and i realize now that i was a bit ahead of myself. i am excited to have a deeper understanding of what this process looks like and am looking fwd to having all passionate and interested parties in the room sitting at the helm of what i hope to be a really beneficial project for our hood.

note: if you are interested in contributing to the direction of this project but cannot make tomorrow's mtg, please contact me directly at mtscott.arleta.na@gmail.com.

thanks,
lisa anne
MSANA chair.

Candlelight Vigil Tomorrow

Saturday evening brought somber news to the neighborhood, as it was learned a pedestrian was killed by a hit-and-run driver while attempting to cross Foster Road near 71st Avenue.  Monday morning made the tragedy all the more real, as the victim's identity was revealed, putting a face and name to the most recent traffic fatality on the busy thoroughfare.

Jason Lee Grant is the latest victim of high speeds and lacking pedestrian safety on Foster Road. And sadly, there's no guarantee he'll be the last until the city implements real safety improvements, such as safer crosswalks, more visible signage, and better lighting.  The city-identified, high crash corridor has long been known as the "Foster Freeway," and pedestrian safety has historically been overlooked in favor of keeping traffic moving quickly, and sometimes abundantly, through Lents, Foster-Powell, Mt. Scott-Arleta, and Creston-Kennilworth.

With the most recent fatality, the affected neighborhoods are eager to prevent similar accidents from happening again. This Thursday evening, February 2nd, neighborhood residents will be holding a candlelight vigil to honor Grant, while also bringing attention to the safety concerns the area has long shared. Residents, activists, and concerned neighbors will be meeting at the site of the accident, near SE 71st and Foster, at 5:30 pm.

Please let us know if you plan to attend, or if you'd like more information.

February's Neighborhood Meeting Agenda

Please join us Wednesday, Feb 1st, at Mt. Scott Community Center for our Monthly Neighborhood Meeting!

Neighborhood Survey Project Funded!

Mt Scott Arleta Neighborhood Association got word last week that we received funds for a grant we submitted via SEUL's Neighborhood Small Grants Program

The project is a partnership with ROSE CDC and the Mt Scott Community Center.  In a nutshell, we will be developing a survey and distributing it to MSA neighbors (that's you!). The information generated will allow us to connect neighbors to one another by establishing hobby and interest groups, generate a volunteer list for future neighborhood projects from this survey engaging our neighbors in creating a more livable and sustainable community.  Additionally, we will collect information from the survey regarding local area businesses, schools, and professionals living in the area to create a directory of resources that can be utilized by neighbors.

Our hope is that this will allow us to foster relationships and build community by helping us connect with one other and work together for the betterment of Mt Scott-Arleta.

There will be many opportunities for service related to this project, the first being survey development.  If you are interested in this aspect please contact me at mtscott.arleta.na@gmail.com.

We look forward to working with many new faces this coming year as this project moves forward.  Some other volunteer opportunities will include: stuffing envelopes, (potentially) distributing surveys door to door, compiling and interpreting the data from returned surveys, and help the development of a community resource guide.  Stay tuned!

APPLY for the Graffiti Abatement Community GRANTS Program!

The goal of the Graffiti Abatement Community Grants Program is to support community-driven improvement projects and community building opportunities in the area of graffiti abatement and attempting to repair harm of graffiti on the community.  The funding for this program is limited and therefore places an emphasis on graffiti prevention, graffiti abatement and/or addressing locations chronically tagged with graffiti.

Please visit SE Uplift's website to learn more!

Our Happy Block (located on SE Woodstock, between SE 80th & 82nd Ave) received funds in 2011 from this exact grant. OHB painted a 50'x23' mural and installed mural lighting to defer graffiti on the chronically 'tagged' wall.

Submission Deadline:  Friday, February 24 by 4:00PM

Come to City Council Tomorrow Afternoon!

Reminder:

On the proposal to construct a new celltower in our neighborhood at the property of Mt.Scott Fuel a hearing will be held by City Council to hear Verizon's appeal of the Hearings Officer's decision. Although the Hearings Officer sided with the objections from neighbors and the board of Mt.Scott-Arleta Neighborhood Association and denied Verizon's application, this appeal to City Council means that we will have to voice our concerns, objections and reasons this proposal should be denied one more time.

The hearing for City Council is on Wednesday January 11 at 2 pm.

Just as with the initial hearing, it will be very beneficial to our case if we have as many people as possible provide testimony and speak to the issue from their own perspective. We did an excellent job the first time around, which as a direct result made us prevail in the first round of the case. We will just have to do it one more time, and with a similar good approach we can have a favorable outcome again and prevail in this appeal to City Council as well!

Therefore, we're hoping that many of you will be able to come to the hearing at City Council on January 11 and will provide testimony.

The hearing for City Council is on Wednesday January 11 at 2 pm.
Address: Council Chambers, 1221 SW Fourth Avenue
More info at: http://www.portlandonline.com/bds/index.cfm?a=376455&c=42262

Note: If you are interested in submitting written testimony by e-mail prior to the meeting, please note that the e-mail address in the notice above that was also mailed out to several people by US Postal mail is incorrect (kmoore-love@ci.porrland.or.us): the correct e-mail address for that is:
Karla.Moore-Love@portlandoregon.gov
